Coffee at 4am in Zagreb — where to get an espresso at night

Need coffee at 3, 4 or 5am? The cafés are shut. The machine at Vendo is on. Here are the options and prices.

Zagreb has a strong café scene, but it all shuts between 6am and 10pm. After that — nothing. Nightclubs don't do coffee, petrol stations are far and pricey, and hotel room service isn't an option if you're not a guest.

At Vendo, by Trg žrtava fašizma, a self-service machine with freshly ground Franck coffee runs 24/7, every day, including Sundays and public holidays. Same price at 4am as at 4pm.

What's on the menu, at what price

  • Espresso for €0.90
  • Long espresso for €0.90
  • Caffe latte for €1.00
  • Cappuccino for €1.00
  • Macchiato for €1.00
  • Mochaccino for €1.00

There are also instant variants (coffee for €0.90, cappuccino/macchiato/mochaccino for €1.00), Franckao for €1.00, tea and Irish.

Who actually needs coffee at 4am

  • Night shift. Hospital, taxi, delivery, security, bakery. Break at 3am, espresso, back to work.
  • Before an early flight or train. Costa at Franjo Tuđman Airport opens at 5am at the earliest, and you're up at 4. Vendo covers the minute before you catch the bus or tram.
  • After a night that stretched too long. Before the taxi home, before you get behind the wheel, before you try to extract any productivity from the remaining five hours of your day.
  • Sunday morning at 6am when everything's closed. Cafés open at 8-9 on Sundays. Vendo doesn't change.
  • A student writing a paper all night. The machine is between the room and the library.

Cafés in Zagreb that stay open latest (for reference)

If you don't want machine coffee and you're after a proper café: most shut at 10 or 11pm. Bars in the centre keep going until 1-2am. After that, only clubs (no coffee) and petrol stations outside the centre are left. That's why the machine at Vendo is often the only realistic night option.

And something with the coffee

7 Days midi croissant for €1.10 for a quick breakfast, Milka Nussini for €0.80 for sweet, a sandwich from from €2.50 if it's real hunger. Water for €1.10 on the side.

How to pay

Card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, contactless. Coins from 10 cents up. 30 seconds and you're out.
